What are the most useful gems to use in Rails?
There are many gems to consider. The following article from RubyGarage is a comprehensive overview of many different gems, 57 Best Ruby Gems We Use at RubyGarage. If you’re looking to implement analytics, I’d also recommend checking out Segment and adding our analytics-ruby gem. Segment is a flexible solution for tracking user activity in any system. Segment provides a single API for you to send track calls that describe user activity. Our library will collect user activity that you send to Segment, and then transforms and forwards those events to any connected destination (we have hundreds of tools to choose from). To get a bit more insight into the implementation, I’d recommend looking at the following tutorial Thoughtbot created on implementing Segment into your Rails application.Hope this helps!

What PDF Software can you recommend to convert my saved Invoices?
I believe it would be much more convenient for you to use an invoicing software which let you save invoices in PDF. Moreover, it has 15 well designed templates which will make your invoice looks professional, with an option to add the logo of your company there. This is how it looks:Templates:Invoice:Here you can have a tour through the website to get more information on how it works. If you are interested, you should definitely give it a try as it is absolutely for free!Hope my reply will help you!Regards,Krystsina
Is there a cheap or free Windows software that will print JPG or PDF files automatically as they are dropped into a particular folder?
I've had them.  Some places to look:Often the printer has a utility for such.  If it's a nice printer, like a copier, it often has the ability to monitor a folder, but on a lower end printer it still may have the ability to have a script triggered by dropping the file onto a something. On the note, often you can create a shortcut to your printer (maybe just dragging it out of Control Panel : Printers while holding down Ctrl[?]), and anything you drop onto that shortcut will be printed.  In fact, on the Mac it's built into the OS.  Many PDF writers have this feature.  I don't know why more PDF writers than printers have it, but if you were to have a folder that auto-PDF'ed things, that may fit your workflow. Not to dodge your question, but you could always right click and hit print on files just as quickly as copying them into a folder.  In windows you can do this in bulk, which is extra-nice.  And for JPGs that would auto- scale and rotate them.Check any of these solutions: Google
Has anyone ever figured out how to get MS Word (Mac) to output active weblinks when using the Save As PDF option in Word?
This is a "Mac vs. PC" issue with Word. You can use the "Free PDF Convert" online converter -- it will maintain the active weblinks and bookmarks within a document: Convert to PDF Online Free
What is it like to switch to Apple Mac after using PCs for many years?
After waiting over 5 years for the successor to Microsoft’s Windows XP, I discovered to my disgust in mid-2007 that it was to be ‘Windows Vista’, a horrible, bloated mess with more “issues” than most people could count. I’d had enough. I wasn’t going to wait another 3 years for Microsoft to fix something they wouldn’t even admit needed fixing.I was at the end of my brand loyalty tether.Having owned a couple of iPods and then an AppleTV, which were “barely viable” on Windows thanks to Apple’s treatment of iTunes-for-Windows as a poor cousin to its Mac-native sibling, I jumped ship to a Macbook Pro laptop, taking a gamble on this fluffy bubble-gummy Macintosh OS X.At the time I was self-employed providing tech-support and infrastructure development services to a small stable of small businesses in my city, focussed on Microsoft Windows technologies - desktops & servers of many types. This was no small deed for me. I knew I could run Windows on this Mac laptop if I wanted/needed to, which I did, but it was also symbolic, at least to me, that I was ditching the Dark Side Of The Force (the incumbents) to become a Jedi (those annoying sanctimonious condescending police of the galaxy). I knew there was a large army of Windows-centric people - my peers - out there who HATED Apple (for reasons that were mostly either obsolete or irrelevant to non-geeks).And despite being a geek, who’re supposed to enjoy devoting endless hours to tinkering and “fixing” their shit, I’d had enough of that malarkey too! I just wanted a freakin computer that worked smoothly without me having to apply my professional knowledge to deal with consumer-level problems. “THIS IS NOT HOW IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE!!” were words that frequently ran through my mind.I took to Mac like a duck to water. After adjusting to some differences (many of which frankly are arbitrary and don’t really matter), I came to appreciate many of Mac’s - IMHO - superior behaviours and features. My computer, my iPod, my AppleTV, and later my first iPhone 3G all “just worked”, together, mostly in harmony, with a huge range of media available in the iTunes store. I was quite happy with Apple’s “walled garden” (a model that has since been replicated by their competitors in various ways). At the time, Android was a steaming pile of Me-Too shit compared to iPhone’s iOS, and Microsoft, Nokia and others were still in denial of the iPhone. Meanwhile “my” stuff “just worked” - mostly. Mostly was enough, because it was night-and-day better then where everyone in the industry was. That was then. 10 years ago there were numerous tangible reasons why Apple’s products and Mac OS were superior when viewed as a multi-device cohesive whole. Yes, I felt more than a little smug, compared to my still-Microsoft-adoring peers who stuck with Windows through another 6 years of embarrassment. But this is now. Everyone who matters has caught up - Android, Microsoft, even Linux, kinda. Thankfully Microsoft have shed themselves of the Lets-Embarrass-Ourselves-A-Second-Time that was Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10 and the Windows application ecosystem is now a thoroughly viable option for virtually every need, including those which were previously considered the sole domain of Apple Macintosh.

I have a couple of new projects, one is a desktop app for Mac OS X, and one is a web app. What is the best way to get attention and press coverage? Should I email media outlets (blogs) with a PDF press release, or link them to a web page?
Here's some tips. We're a web startup and managed to gain coverage from TechCrunch, VentureBeat, GigaOm and other major blogs on our launch day.Proof: ooomf - Google SearchHope this helps.Email example for contacting press:For contacting the press, here's an example of a cold email format that we used. This does require taking an actual interest into the journalists that you plan on pitching.Journalists often write about cool stuff anyway so it can be fun to follow along, read their articles and if you find them interesting, that's probably a good indication that they may be a good fit to cover your story.Remember, it's always about their audience. Don't pitch a journalist who's audience wouldn't give 2 shits about your app.If you can, I would also recommend that you try to go to some upcoming tech events that may be close to you. There's often writers there looking for interesting apps to cover. We went to one event where we knew some writers were going to be and connected with them. This helped us out immensely.subject line:Hi author's first name - Launch story for a new app that helps you unique value of your productbody: Hey author's first name, A while back you wrote an interesting piece about an app similar to yours or maybe it was an article about the space that your app is in (i.e. efficiency/time management) and how it something interesting from that article. your opinion or write a sentence about how this relates to your app. Our app, your app's name, is building a unique value of your app. We'll be launching in 2 weeks.Do you think this could be an interesting story for your readers?Another tip for contacting press:If a writer responds, followup with your press kit immediately, which should include the following: - press release (includes the story for how your product came to be and any important links to your website or demo video) - icon (with sizes 56x56, 114x114, 256x256, 512x512) - screenshots - marketing images of your app - team pic(s)Find which mobile writers you should contact:One way to find the right writers to contact is to search for an app's URL that is a competitor to yours on http://Alexa.com and find out the most relevant press coverage they received. For example, if BandsInTown was a competitor for your app, you could search Alexa for all the inbound links to Bandsintown and try reaching out to the writers of each of these stories and mention how your app is unique compared to BandsInTown.Find early customers on Twitter:Target keywords on Twitter for people that are looking for the problem that your product solves. For instance, if your app allows them to track daily habits, you could search Twitter for "track" and "habits." You can find all the people talking about this topic on Twitter right now: Search - "track" "habits"
